Daily Journal-Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas, a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is known for its beaches, water-based activities and nightlife.  We were excited to get away from the frigid midwest US temps for a short bit in January.

Day 1:

A fun Christmas gift to the kids, focusing on experiences vs things. We were hoping to enjoy some warm weather, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico did not disappoint in that category.  Weather in the upper 70s during the day and 60s at night. We were excited to explore a part of Mexico we have never been. The water is beautiful, the sunset is so colorful, and people have been friendly and welcoming. In fact, we were on a serious struggle bus with the parking ATM: it wouldn’t take credit cards nor American dollars (American dollars accepted everywhere… except the parking ATM 🤷🏻‍♀️). Only Pesos. Two sweet young Mexican ladies offered to pay for us and took care of everything. How generous is that?? I offered dollars. They declined and wished us a good night. Once again I continue to be amazed at how kind and helpful people are ALL over the world. 💜
Did you know? Archaeological excavations have shown evidence of continual human habitation in the area for at least 10,000 years. When the first Europeans arrived, they encountered the Pericú people. So cool! With this weather, I can see why people have lived here for thousands of years. ☀️☀️🩵☀️☀️

Day 2:

We woke early to meet our boat captain for a morning of deep sea fishing, followed by lunch with our Marlin catch and finished the day with the art walk at San Jose del Cabo.
We met our fishing captain at 6:15 am and headed about 4 miles off the coast. It took about an hour for us to get a bite and what a bite it was. My son started working on reeling in a 150 lb rascal, a Marlin. There was loads of excitement on the boat. Unfortunately, after that , the wind picked up, the seas got really choppy… So no more fishing.
We had the Marlin prepared and most of the meat flash frozen for us to bring home. The butcher gave us a bag to take to his restaurant to prepare a lunch. This was amazing. They prepared it about 10 different ways for us to feast on. And it was absolutely Delicious!!
Back to the Airbnb for a nap and then off to San Jose del Cabo for the evening. This little city hosts a huge artisans market every Thursday. Art, jewelry, street food, you name it. It was beautiful to walk around and we enjoyed the street food. The churros were especially notable!  I would definitely recommend driving there earlier in the day from Cabo San Lucas as the traffic is something else to contend with.  End of day traffic causes significant delays.  What should have been a 30 minute drive took us over an hour.  Parking is also a challenge.  It’s hard to find parking close to the market.  We parked on Blvd Antonio Mijares to the south of the roundabout.
It was a full day of fun and exploring.

Day 3/4:

Today was a quiet beach day.  Many of the beaches are not recommended for swimming so we opted to check out Chileno Beach, which was recommended by our Airbnb host.  It’s a beautiful beach and many people were in the water.  Word of warning:  do not order the ceviche on the beach, unless you want a serious case of Cabo belly.  No fun!

Day 5:

It’s pretty here… 🩵
Unless you eat the ceviche offered on the beach and the whole crew ends up with Cabo belly. Stupid move on our part. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Feeling better today and adventured up to Todos Santos, a cute little community on the pacific coast who has claimed that the Eagle’s Hotel California is inspired by a hotel there … perhaps that’s just a story to bring the tourists. Regardless it’s a cute little magical town and the Pacific surf is impressive.
An exhilarating moment frozen in time, as two brothers watch the waves of the Mexican coast, showcasing the joy and adventure of traveling as a family.

Day 6:

Our last day here:  Today we scheduled a sunset dinner cruise, which turned into a tequila slinging dance party.  😉  The catamaran was fun, the group on the boat were fabulous and made sure we had a great time!  The sunset was spectacular… and we finished the night at Cabo Wabo – more dancing and live music!  A great way to end a Cabo vacation…
